About

Set on the west coast of South Knapdale in Argyll, the Kilberry Castle Estate lies near the hamlet of Kilberry (Cill-Bheiridh) and overlooks the Sound of Jura. This small privately owned Scottish estate, dating back to the XVth century, is steeped in history and framed by the dramatic landscape of the West Coast.

Located in a designated Area of Panoramic Quality, the Kilberry Castle Estate offers views of Jura, Islay, Gigha and Cara, while its rich and varied habitats play host to a diversity of ecological communities. It is home to the only Scottish population of the nationally rare Marsh Pea (Lathyrus palustris) and was the first recorded mainland site in Scotland for the Meadow Thistle (Cirsium dissectum).

The Estate embraces a range of interests and activities, and it is the preservation of natural beauty, history, and culture that unites them all. The Estate's farming operations are low intensity in character, aspire to embodying the most natural methods and are always informed by values of respect and care. The exceptional quality of local produce, from honey to lamb, reflects both the family philosophy and natural terroir.

Produce from the Estate is supplied to the Estate’s restaurant, The Kilberry Inn, which has won awards from Michelin and other leading names, and champions a farm-to-table ethos and a philosophy of "local first".

Once neglected following widespread social changes that reached this remote corner of rural Argyll, the historic buildings on the Estate are now undergoing a careful and extensive renovation that will take a number of years to accomplish.

The project includes the full restoration of the main house, Kilberry Castle, which is currently anticipated to complete in 2027, and its reinstatement as a private residence for the Estate’s family owners.

The renovation also contemplates the intelligent and sensitive repurposing of numerous dilapidated buildings across the Estate which are intended to form a solid foundation for new rural enterprises.

Across all its activities, the Kilberry Castle Estate is committed to sustaining the local community, by providing employment opportunities as well as by collaborating with and supporting other rural businesses throughout Knapdale, Kintyre and the Isles.

The vision is to give a second life to the Kilberry Castle Estate, harmoniously blending its historic legacy with contemporary practices so as to assure its vitality and relevance for generations to come.
